Important Safety Information
Antidepressants increased the risk compared to placebo of suicidal thinking and behavior (suicidality) in children, teens, and young adults. Depression and certain other psychiatric disorders are themselves associated with increases in the risk of suicide. Patients of all ages who are started on antidepressant therapy should be monitored appropriately and observed closely for clinical worsening, suicidality, or unusual changes in behavior. EFFEXOR XR® (venlafaxine HCl) is not approved for use in children and teens.
PRISTIQ, introduced in 2008, is another product from Wyeth approved by the FDA for the treatment of major depressive disorder in adults. Find out more.

Effexor XR® (venlafaxine hydrochloride—or HCl) is a prescription antidepressant proven to treat the symptoms of depression and three anxiety disorders: generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder (PD), and social anxiety disorder (SAD).
For more than 12 years, EFFEXOR XR has been used by many people to help manage the symptoms of depression.
Effexor XR is believed to treat depression and anxiety symptoms by affecting the levels of two naturally occurring chemicals in the brain — serotonin and norepinephrine. It is believed that correcting an imbalance of these two chemicals may help relieve symptoms. Because Effexor XR affects these two chemicals, it is known as an SNRI, or serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor.
